Unclaimed Property & Funds – Federal, State & Provincial Offices

This page contains a list of all 50 States, plus D.C., Guam, the U.S. Virgin Islands, Puerto Rico, and several Canadian Provinces, with links to their official website’s unclaimed property divisions and contact information. There is also a link to the IRS (for unclaimed tax refunds), FDIC, the Pension Benefit Guaranty Corporation (for unclaimed retirement accounts), HUD Mortgage Insurance, Credit Union Funds, plus Australian & Swiss Bank Accounts (just for fun - who knows what you might find)

Unclaimed FundsStates and Provinces try to find missing owners in many ways. Besides creating a search portal within the state’s official website (see links below), most states publish listings in the newspapers of general circulation. Some States and Provinces also set up booths at their State fairs and other State events and many host telethons to try and locate missing owners.

Some people and companies, commonly known as “heir finders” and “unclaimed fund finders” will contact consumers about unclaimed funds, set up official looking websites, even sell books on the subject. But these companies and individuals are only willing to “help” you find unclaimed funds or property in exchange for a “finder’s” fee which can be as much as 50% of the property or funds amount due to you. Or, they might be trying to get your personal information to either spam you with emails and phone calls, or worse, they might be trying to collect your private information to steal your identity.

Unclaimed PropertyWe highly recommend you NEVER use one of these “heir finders” or “unclaimed fund finders” services as there are many ways for you to do this on your own. We suggest you first try and locate these funds and properties yourself, for free, by using reputable websites such as MissingMoney.com and Unclaimed.org. And if you don’t see any funds or property listed or if you get too many items listed and can’t make sense of it, you should contact the state or province directly by using the links below.

The reason why we don’t suggest you simply go straight to the state link (for the state you now live in or once lived in) first, is because using the websites mentioned above will do a national search for you, making sure every state and province is covered in one search. Hey, you never know, a company that owes you money may be based out of another state and that may be where you have money owed to you, or you may have an inheritance of property you weren’t aware of, in another state or province. It’s well worth a few minutes of your time to do a search.
